I'm trying to benchamark performance of the instances, as part of the cloud. I'm trying to gather data to help plan capacity and shapes. Right now I'm using the phoronix test suite on individual instances.

Sure, the Phoronix test suite would be good for that. You can specify which tests to run, and compare the runs easily.
